Perception.

Perception is always explained as the way you see things and the way you interpret and understand the events that are happening around you. Your perception of a certain issue can be affected by various factors and usually by perceiving something you might end up coming up with certain assumptions that might not necessarily be true.

The many factors that contribute to one's perception of things would definitely be media, the various backgrounds the people are from or maybe even due to societal, cultural or religious aspects. When a person views an article or reads a certain piece of information, he/she is entitled to his own opinion and thus forms his own perception. This perception could however been wavered leading to them forming an assumption. Yet, however people do have to realise that an assumption might not be true which means they should not be stereotyping or assuming that the information they have read about if justifiable.

Take for example The Da Vinci Code Criticism issue which took place a few years back when the famous best-selling Dan Brown book was made into a blockbuster film and released to the public. While it was "just" a novel, the author claimed that the information contained in it was based on truth and historical facts, and for that reason many folks took it seriously while others, the more religious ones, criticized it alot. They totally discriminated the book and were against the author and his books and caused a controversy.

Many christians were greatly affected as they were offended by the book because many of the facts that the author was deadly serious about was somehow or rather against their own beliefs of how they religion originated and what they've known for so long about their own religion so when the author claimed that what they believed was untrue, they disagreed and were taken aback when the author refused to budge with his idea. This shows how a different perception about a certain topic could cause alot of tension between people and in this case, the different perception of a topic is seen thru a religious/cultural side as the people were offended since the information was going against what they have learned in their culture and belief and this causes controversy due to the fact that what they have learned before is now threatened.

So what is your take on this controversial topic? and is your comment based on your own perception or are you being rather general about it? do comment please! and before you do, take a look at these websites to see what the perceptions of others out there are.

  1. Perception is formed based on past experience / or stereotyping that will lead to the behavior. I guess for the Da vinci case, because it was published in the book and and even in movie, people percieve as the truth with stereotyping that books publishes facts

  2. We are all entitled to our own thoughts, opinions and of course perception of matters. The christians if they were indeed unwavering about their beliefs should just preached about Christianity instead of trying to bring down the author. False history gets made all day, any day,
the truth of the new is never on the news.

  3. Perception is really based on the individual's mindset and their environment of interaction. Media does hype up or sensationalize certain ideals, and this also gets rooted in people's mindsets after repeated influence. Religion being a sensitive area of topic, would definitely generate a wave of controversy, and there are bound to be people who are for or against.

  4. Hi Sharifa!

It is a no-brainer that the comments Dan Brown had made would cause a controversy. Apart from race and gender, religion is probably one of the most (or dare I say most) sensitive issue to discuss about. With Dan Brown providing a different perception to his own version of the religion, devout followers of Christ are sure to defend their own religion and belief. Even though I feel that a diversity of perceptions would make our world a more vibrant environment, there are still certain issues that should not be made known publicly, in respect to The Da Vinci Code.

  5. I'm not a christian therefore not very appopriate for me to comment on Da Vinci. However, unless you are not a human being, you will have your own perception. I can only say, you can have your perception, but back it up with FACTS.

  6. Preception is build up from past experience and the amount of knowledge we have. But we should have strong faith in the religion we believe in.

  7. How we percieve things is caused by our experiences from birth. Our parents try to teach us something, but how our friends, family react to it causes a change in how we percieve it. Our "opinions" are an amalgamation of years of looking at reactions, listening to other peoples opinions, learning societal norms. The media do have a part to play in changing our perceptions, but the little opinions of our friends and family have a much more drastic effect, especially at a younger age.

For example, I percieve Dan Brown as an idiot because of the many documentaries on his book. Other people have shown me how many of his claims were based on insufficient research hearsay. This is in contrast to how I originally felt about the book when reading it. Experiencing the documentary and the opinions in it changed my perception of the situation.

I will have to admit my perception is mostly based on beliefs and experiences. Sometimes, I would very much like to change my perspective on certain beliefs but each time facts prove me right. Of course, perceptions are just opinions. So at the end of the day, we still have to get the facts right first.

  9. Perception is definitely something that is created by a number of factors as pointed out by the author. However, we should not just listen to the idea and points of views of others blindly. We are all individuals and we should learn to think for ourselves.

  10. The Da Vinci code was just a book. People should not take such things so seriously and get so worked up for nothing.

  11. Perception is always changing. One day, the truth would be revealed and people would realise that whatever they believed on this matter was untrue.

  12. I'm a atheist. I belief that all this hullabaloo about Christianity and the secrets found in the book are all morbid and a waste of time and energy.

  13. It can't be denied that everyone of us perceive things. Just by asking our opinion of the issue, we are already perceiving it based on our own judgements.
I guess here, everyone should not take things too seriously. If they know that they're religion is true, why bother about what others say and how it's perceived in the movie?

  14. I agree that The Da Vinci Code is a rather controversial book that caused quite an upstir in the Christianity world. The Da Vinci Code had a focus on religion and as we know, religion has always been a rather sensitive and touchy topic to begin with. Hence for Dan Brown to provide a new perspective on Christianity, a perspective that may threatens the truth of Christianity, devout Christians will most surely stand up and defend their own religion. That is to say, the topic on religion will generate a wave of controversy and differing perspectives on the issue will definitely occur.

  15. Get your facts straight and think through what you say before you say anything. We are all entitled to our own opinions, but that does not excuse ignorance nor stupidity.
